Opt Out of the State Test

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Over the past couple of years, parents and communities have become aware of the proliferating consequences associated with the New York State ELA and Math tests. These tests are administered to students in grades 3-8. Last year, parents throughout New York and in our Levittown community opted to refuse these tests for their children.

While it is inappropriate for an individual teacher to advise parents on "opting-out" of the state tests, we are hoping that you will utilize the information in this letter in order to make your own decision regarding your child's education. Please visit the links below for more information about your right to refuse the tests.

The Levittown United Teachers and our state affiliate NYSUT, are in complete support of parents' right to choose what is best for their children. We also support a parent's right to refuse the state tests if the parent believes state testing is inappropriate or harmful to his or her child.

While the New York State Education Department's overreliance on state tests creates unfortunate consequences for students, teachers and schools, please know that we value your children as much more than a test score.

Sincerely,
John Caulfield,
Levittown United Teachers
