Last week, Making Strides Event Chair for NYSUT Long Island, Debra Puccio, announced that Governor Cuomo approved plans for a modified version of the annual Making Strides event at Jones Beach State Park.

The event will still take place on Sunday, October 18th at Jones Beach, Field 5. However, rather than the traditional walkathon, the event will be a drive-through experience.  Here are some details for those wishing to participate:

  • The event will run from 7am - 2pm, but the actual drive-through event will take only about 10-15 minutes per car.
  • Participants MUST reserve a specific time slot by 10/15 for a car dashboard pass that will be sent to your personal email on 10/16.
  • Participants MUST register online and reserve the time slot for your car to enter the caravan.
  • You will be asked to show your pass on the day of the event.  You can either print it out and place it on your car's dashboard or show the gatekeeper your pass on your phone.
  • Feel free to "pink out" your car!
  • The first 2,000 people to register online with receive a swag bag when they arrive at the event. The bag will be placed in your trunk or you can grab it out of a basket in order to keep this a contactless event.
  • Cars must maintain a constant speed of 3-5 mph as they make their way through the route. No car can stop and no one can get out of a car.   The American Cancer Society (ACS) has been warned that the event will be shut down if people start getting out of cars along the route.
  • Upon arrival, you will be told a specific radio station to tune your car radio to so that you can listen to a custom playlist and announcements along the route.
  • NYSUT members who attend might want to keep an eye out for the 30' long pink pinwheel garden along the route.  A photo of our own, Sheila Goldberg, will be on display since ACS had dedicated this event in her memory.
To register for this Making Strides event, visit the American Cancer Society's Making Strides website using the following link:

For anyone looking for alternative events during Breast Cancer Awareness month, the ACS is planning other contactless options.

On Sunday, October 18 at 12noon, the ACS is streaming a virtual event called "Strides Live Across America" on both Facebook and YouTube.  The program can be accessed clicking the following hyperlinks:
