The nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education has caused considerable anxiety amongst supporters of public education. This anxiety is due in no small part to Mrs. DeVos' record of promoting policies that siphon taxpayer money away from public schools and into the hands of private industry for the purpose of expanding private charter schools.

On January 23, member of the House of Representatives from the state of Iowa, Steve King, introduced a bill, H.R. 610. This bill would offer grants in federal funding to states for the purpose of providing vouchers for students to attend private schools.

Supporters of public education have stated clearly that efforts to promote private schools serve only to draw resources away from public schools that are attended by the vast majority of American children.

Advocate groups for public education, such as the Network for Public Education, have begun the fight against H.R. 610. You can read more about their efforts and learn how you can take part in their fight to protest the privatization of public education on their website.
