Regents Planning a One Year Extension of Teacher Evaluation Moratorium

Last week, the New York State Board of Regents directed the state education department to develop regulations that would extend by one year the moratorium that bans the use of grade 3-8 state test scores in teacher evaluations.

The moratorium on the use of state test scores was set to expire at the end of the current school year. While NYSUT welcomes the extension, it is the position of our state union that only a legislative fix to the Education Transformation Act of 2015 will lead to permanent solutions to the many issues associated with state testing and teacher evaluations.

 

When new leadership takes control of the State Senate in 2019, NYSUT will be pushing for legislation that will remove state tests from teacher evaluations and methods of teacher evaluation to collectively bargained agreements between local unions and school districts.
