On September 6th, two MacArthur High School teachers, Tammy Mayer and Nicole Savage, received a truly well-deserved recognition.  Tammy and Nicole got to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Lower Manhattan, New York City.

The two educators were honored not for their work in the classroom, but for their tremendous bravery and philanthropy outside of it.

For fighting and winning their battles against breast cancer, and for their extraordinary efforts in raising awareness and raising funds to fight against the disease, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization honored Mayer and Savage as their 2016 Co-survivors of the year and asked them to help represent the Komen organization in the closing bell ceremony.

The ceremony was featured on the NYSE website and on several television networks including CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business news, reaching millions of viewers worldwide.

The event provided a kick-off for the Komen organization’s “Race Week” that culminated with the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Central Park on Saturday, September 10.  In fundraising efforts for the Race, Tammy and Nicole raised well over $6,000.

Each year in our district, Tammy and Nicole work diligently throughout the month of October on a number of Breast Cancer awareness and fundraising activities including our MacArthur High School “Dig Pink” varsity girls volleyball game and “Pink Out” varsity football game.  This year’s Pink Out football game will take place on the evening of October 14.

Since its inception in 1982, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization has spent over $2 billion for breast cancer education, research, advocacy, health services and social support programs throughout the world.  You can learn more about the Komen foundation at: http://ww5.komen.org.
