On Wednesday, May 11, Levittown Retired Teachers (LRT) President, Jean Fontana, announced to the members present at their spring meeting that she will be stepping down from her position.

For many, many years, Jean Fontana has been an inspiration and driving force behind the Levittown Retired Teachers and the Levittown United Teachers. Jean started teaching in Levittown in 1982 and retired in June of 2006. From 2001 to 2006, she was a building representative from East Broadway Elementary School.

Since 2010, Jean has been the President of the Levittown Retired Teachers. Under her leadership, the LRT maintained strong membership numbers and has been active in many causes that benefit unions and teachers.

Speaking recently at a lunch in Jean’s honor, LUT President, John Caulfield said, “I have known Jean for 26 years. In that time, I have seen her in action as both a dedicated teacher and union activist. Jean’s passion and fierceness as a champion of unions will never be matched. Thank you for all your years of service. You will be greatly missed.”

At the spring LRT meeting, there was discussion regarding who might become the next President of the organization. However, while someone will do this job in the future, no one can ever replace Jean’s passion for teaching and for the importance of unions in the fight for the rights of American workers everywhere.

Jean Fontana has been a mentor to so many of us. Her wisdom, positive spirit and energy continue to have an impact to all those associated with the LUT and LRT. We congratulate Jean, thank her for her years and years of outstanding leadership, and know that even though she will not be President, she will continue to be strong voice in support of everything we do as educators and unionists!
