Work Together to Preserve our Future

I hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with their family and friends. I also hope everyone is settling into and enjoying this holiday season. I know that it is my favorite time of year.

Unfortunately, recent news, both nationally and locally, regarding public education is extremely unsettling. The nomination of Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary, is a complete nightmare for public education supporters. A billionaire with no experience or degrees in education who brings an ideology of privatizing education should have us all concerned. She has spent billions of dollars of her family's wealth attempting to dismantle public education in the state of Michigan. Now, there is reason to be concerned that she has a platform to impose her reckless beliefs on the entire nation.

On the state level, charter schools won a major victory. The growth of charter schools throughout our state will spell disaster for public education as they continue to siphon public funds from our schools and our children.

So, yes, there is work to be done. However, we have been here before and we have proven to be resilient. Let us all take time now to reflect on the successes we achieved in the past and let these recent developments compel us to work together towards preserving our future - no matter what the odds.

In the words of John D. Rockefeller:

"I do not think that there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything...."

I have no doubt that we will persevere.

Please enjoy this holiday season with your friends and family. Also, try and savor the much needed rest that you all deserve.

Best wishes!
