Several members of the LUT played leading roles in raising funds and awareness during this October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Our new Liaison for the LUT Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Team, Andrea Fitzpatrick, reported that this year the LUT, along with Levittown Schools students and their families, raised over $6,000! Out of 1,017 teams formed in the American Cancer Society Making Strides program, the LUT finished in 34th place. Of the 257 teams in the program under the umbrella of our state union, NYSUT, the LUT was the 5th highest fundraiser. This is a truly remarkable achievement and the result of the hard work and contributions of many members of the LUT and Levittown Schools community.
One of the most impressive Breast Cancer Awareness events held anywhere on Long Island is the annual Pink Out varsity football and Dig Pink varsity girls’ volleyball games at MacArthur High School. These events are spearheaded by LUT member, Nicole Savage, and recent LUT retiree, Tammy Mayer.
For this year’s Pink Out and Dig Pink events, proceeds went to support the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Between donations, apparel sales, online raffles, and during game sales, MacArthur’s campaign raised over $17,000!
When reporting the fundraising news, Nicole Savage thanked all the LUT members who worked on the MacArthur program with the teams they coach and clubs they advise. Savage, a breast cancer survivor herself, also had some very important words of wisdom for everyone. “… although we raise money for research, we also try to raise awareness, not only of the dangers of breast cancer but all cancers,” Savage said, “so please, take the time to get screened. Early detection literally saves lives, and we are 100% proof of that.”
One of the most touching events of Breast Cancer Awareness month took place at Wisdom Lane Middle School in honor of Rosemary Daly, a former member of the LUT who had a 33 year-long career teaching at both Levittown Memorial and Wisdom Lane. In 2019, Daly passed away from appendix cancer. In her memory, two LUT members, Lynn Anderson and Eric Bradley organized a student-faculty volleyball tournament fundraiser. This year, Anderson and Bradley decided to donate all the proceeds from the tournament to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program in Rosemary Daly’s name.
All in all, members of the LUT, as they have for many years now, continued to show tremendous leadership in the world-wide efforts to fund cancer research and raise awareness.
